Mahavir Mahavidyalaya, Kolhapur established in 1970 is one of the reputed institutions in Kolhapur and is affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Since inception, it has been working with a vision of empowering students with higher learning and research capabilities through value based education and working for better education for better society. Though the college is in urban area, majority of the students of the college are from rural area. Most of them are from socially disadvantaged and economically backward sections and minority communities. The institute is a recognized as a Jain Religious Minority College. The college was accredited with B (CGPA 2.61) grade in August, 2011 in its 2nd cycle by NAAC, Bangalore.
The college runs eleven graduate courses, a Post Graduate Course in Counseling Psychology, two Career Oriented Courses, six short term courses and distance education centers of YCMOU and Shivaji University. The college obtained permission to start B. Sc. Programme from Government of Maharashtra and first year B.Sc. has been started. The management of the college has initiated the process of construction of a five storied building for B. Sc. programme from the academic year 2017-18. The college has been running B. A. B. Ed. (Four year Integrated) Course since 1985 that has produced a number of quality teachers in the jurisdiction of Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
The college is recipient of certificate of merit for securing the first rank in faculty of education in urban category. The students of B. A. B. Ed. and M.A. (Psychology) regularly figure in the merit list of Shivaji University. A teacher from Department of Geography has received Barrister P. G. Patil Ideal Teacher Award in 2015-16 by Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
